Ronaldo Misses Portugal Squad but World Cup 2026 Hopes Remain Intact
Roberto Martinez confirms Cristiano Ronaldo's hamstring injury will sideline him for March friendlies against Mexico and USA, but insists the veteran forward will be ready for the World Cup.
Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Portugal's crucial March friendlies against World Cup co-hosts Mexico and the United States, but head coach Roberto Martinez has moved quickly to reassure fans that the veteran forward's participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is not in doubt. The absence marks a rare occasion for Portugal to take the field without their legendary captain, who last missed a national team squad in 2018.
Minor Setback, Not Major Concern
Ronaldo has been sidelined by a hamstring injury sustained on February 28 while playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. The 41-year-old has not featured for his club since late February, prompting Martinez to make the prudent decision to rest him during the international break.
"No, he's not in danger," Martinez said emphatically at his press conference. "It's a minor muscle injury, and we think he can be back in a week or two. Everything Cristiano has done physically this season shows that he's in great shape."
Fresh Faces Get Opportunity
In Ronaldo's absence, Martinez has called up some exciting new options. Real Sociedad winger Goncalo Guedes receives his first national team call-up since 2022, offering fresh energy on the wing. West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes earns his first senior call-up after impressing for the under-21 side.
Portugal will face Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Saturday, March 28, before taking on the United States in Atlanta on March 31. Both matches carry added significance as they face World Cup co-hosts in World Cup venues.
