France Embrace Brazil Challenge as World Cup 2026 Preparation Intensifies
Didier Deschamps urges Les Bleus to seize the moment as they face Brazil and Colombia in crucial pre-World Cup friendlies in the United States.
France head coach Didier Deschamps has challenged his star-studded squad to embrace the pressure of facing Brazil as Les Bleus enter the final phase of their World Cup 2026 preparations. With the tournament less than three months away, France's March friendlies in the United States represent a critical dress rehearsal for one of the competition's most decorated teams.
High-Stakes Friendlies in America
The reigning runners-up will face Brazil on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, before taking on Colombia on Sunday at Northwest Stadium near Washington. Both matches carry significant weight despite their friendly status, as Deschamps seeks to fine-tune his squad ahead of the 48-team tournament set to be held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
"Playing Brazil is always a special occasion," Deschamps said on the eve of the clash. "It's been over 10 years since we last faced Brazil. It's a big fixture because Brazil and France are among the teams that capture the imagination of many people thanks to the results they've achieved. It's a friendly match, of course, but one with a lot at stake."
Mbappe Returns to Lead Les Bleus
The French squad features captain Kylian Mbappe, who has recently returned from a knee injury that briefly sidelined him at Real Madrid. The 27-year-old forward, who scored a hat trick in the 2022 World Cup final despite France's penalty shootout defeat, is determined to lead his nation to glory on their third attempt at football's ultimate prize.
"It's always fun to play against one of the world's top teams," Mbappe said. "Brazil have won the World Cup five times and it's going to be brilliant to have so much talent on the pitch. The match will give us an idea of what we're capable of at the World Cup this summer."
Deschamps named an expanded 27-man squad for the American tour, featuring nine forwards including Mbappe, Real Madrid teammate Ousmane Dembele, Paris Saint-Germain duo Desire Doue and Randal Kolo Muani, Bayern Munich's Michael Olise, and Manchester City's Rayan Cherki.
World Cup Expectations
France kick off their quest for a third World Cup trophy on June 16 against Senegal at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. As one of the tournament favorites alongside Brazil, Argentina, England, and Spain, France carry enormous expectations.
"Winning a World Cup is always the defining moment of your career," Mbappe said. "It's such a rare feat, so incredibly difficult. If we manage to win, it will be something truly wonderful, both for the France players and for all the French people."
